"Chinese Four Arts" refers to Chinese Calligraphy, Painting, Seal Carving, and Poem. As one of the Chinese Four Arts, seal carving dated back more than 3000 years. It is a unique part of the Chinese culture. An artwork of Chinese Calligraphy or Painting is incomplete without a seal stamped in red. It serves as the signature of the artist as well as an indispensable final touch to live up the art work. Chinese seals reflect the development of Chinese characters. Chinese seal carving is also called Zhuan ke because traditionally, Chinese seal is curved using Zhuan style. The characters on a seal may be cut in relief (1) or in intaglio (2). Among many different types of materials used for making Chinese seals, soapstone is the most commonly used today.
To create an artistic Chinese seal, the artist should master the skills of Chinese Calligraphy, composition, and handwork.
