About the Artist

Chengwei Fang was born and raised in Liaoning province in the northeast of China. He moved to the US and received graduate degrees from North Carolina State University and University of Delaware. Since 1999, he has worked for DuPont, BASF, and Merck Co. Currently, he is a senior scientist at Astrazeneca Pharmaceuticals LP.

Chengwei started learning and practicing Chinese Calligraphy since elementary school under the guidance of his father, who was a teacher at the school and a respected amateur calligrapher. His skills in Chinese calligraphy further improved at college where he was an active member of the student calligraphy association. Also at college, he started Chinese seal carving and created many collectable chops for his friends and fellow students. After moving to the US in 1991, he continued his passion for Chinese Calligraphy and seal carving. He exhibited his art works at international cultural festivals and community activities in North Carolina, Delaware, and Pennsylvania. For example, in 1996, he designed the top selling t-shirts for the Delaware Chinese Festival. In March 2004, when China on Tour, 7000 years finished its well-known two year North American tour in Raleigh, He was invited as a performing artist to demonstrate his seal carving skills alongside the seven selected artisans from all over China. In early 2006, he volunteered during the Cultural Festival celebration at the Upper Main Line YMCA in Berwyn, PA, where to further promote the YMCA motto, he created and donated his Calligraphy artworks. These art works are displayed at the Headquarter of the Upper Main Line YMCA as part of the permanent corporate collection. He is well known in local Chinese community for his calligraphy and seal carving talents.
